Will the Hudson Valley launch fruitcakes on Saturday?

National Fruitcake Throwing Day is this weekend. Will you participate?

According to the National Day calendar, National Fruitcake Day is usually the third weekend in January, but sometimes fun holidays are listed as the first Saturday in December. But it is confirmed for Saturday January 22 of this year. The holidays challenge us to throw a fruitcake as far as we can. Of course, fruitcakes are given as gifts during the holidays, some eat them, others re-gift them. And then there’s another kind of fruitcake, someone who comes out of the woodwork once a year. They are characters who have accumulated, stored and hidden them to be able to celebrate with a kind of competition.

The very first Great Fruitcake Toss was held in 1996 in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Locals gathered in the city park and threw away their unwanted fruitcakes for a bit of festive fun after the holidays. Each year, participants compete to see who can throw or throw their fruitcakes the farthest.

This fun day got me wondering if there was an official fruitcake launch here in the Hudson Valley. Searching the internet, I couldn’t find anything. Guess I’ll have to do my own event. MDR

National Fruitcake Throwing Day shall be observed by holding a competition in accordance with the National Day calendar. They say to invite the family outside with their respective fruitcakes and take turns throwing them as far as they can. Make hot chocolate and prizes. Share your celebration using #FruitcakeTossDay on social media.
