“Delta variant hits” New York

The governor of New York has given New Yorkers grim news about the more contagious Delta variant.

For all the news that the Hudson Valley shares, be sure to follow Hudson Valley Post on Facebook, download the Hudson Valley Post mobile app, and sign up for the Hudson Valley Post newsletter.

Governor Kathy Hochul briefed New Yorkers on the state’s progress in the fight against COVID-19 on Wednesday. 2.62 percent of all tests came back positive in the previous 24 hours. The 7-day positivity rate is also 2.91%.

The Hudson Valley’s COVID positivity rate remains higher than the state. The positivity rate for the Mid-Hudson region is 2.92%. The North Country has the highest COVID positivity rate in New York at 5.85%.

Although the state’s positivity rate continues to decline, Hochul warns that the most contagious Delta variant is spreading quickly in New York City.

“The Delta variant is sweeping the state, causing an increase in COVID cases in our communities,” Hochul said. “It’s up to us to prevent our progress against the virus from being dashed.”

Stay informed: CDC coronavirus website

Hochul reported that 30 more New Yorkers have died from COVID, bringing the total number of reported COVID deaths in New York City to 56,371. 315 New Yorkers have been admitted to hospital. 2,352 New Yorkers are currently hospitalized for COVID, including 560 in intensive care and 325 in intensive care with intubation.

Hochul confirmed that 82.9% of all New Yorkers 18 and older received at least one vaccine while 74.4% completed their vaccine series. 70.2% of all eligible New Yorkers have at least one dose of the vaccine.

“It is crucial that we remain vigilant. Wash your hands, wear a mask and get vaccinated,” Hochul said.

Mosquitoes in New York hospitalize Hudson Valley residents

People in the Hudson Valley are hospitalized after being bitten by mosquitoes carrying a potentially paralyzing virus.

For all the news the Hudson Valley shares, be sure to follow Hudson Valley Post on Facebook, download the Hudson Valley Post mobile app and sign up for the Hudson Valley Post newsletter.

Westchester County confirmed its second human case of West Nile virus on Wednesday in 2021. A 66-year-old resident with underlying health conditions is currently hospitalized with the virus, officials said.

“This second case of West Nile virus should remind all of us to take precautions against mosquito bites by removing standing water from our property and using repellents when we spend time outdoors, especially the dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler said.

The Westchester County Department of Health inspected the area around the resident’s home for potential mosquito breeding sites, assessed catch basins near the area and treated these with larvicides. as needed, according to officials.

Last week, the virus hospitalized a 58-year-old Westchester County resident with several underlying health conditions. Officials have not provided an update.

West Nile virus infection most often causes mild to moderate flu-like illness, but can be more severe, especially in people 60 years of age and older and those with other health complications.

Symptoms of West Nile virus usually appear three to 14 days after the bite. Symptoms include high fever, headache, confusion, muscle pain, weakness, seizures or, in severe cases, paralysis.

Last year, three people were diagnosed with West Nile virus, including a resident of Yonkers who died from the virus. In 2019, a Westchester County resident had the virus.

Residents should inspect their property and remove any standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Residents who notice large bodies of standing water on public property should report them to the Westchester County Department of Health at (914) 813-5000.

Marc Molinaro announces his candidacy for Congress, candidate for the 19th

During much of the pandemic, Marc Molinaro openly criticized former Governor Andrew Cuomo, calling for more local power and reforms in the state capital.

On Tuesday, he shifted his target to the nation’s capital, both as the subject of his critics and as his next career goal.

“Washington must have learned a lesson from Albany,” he said. “And Antonio Delgado must have learned a lesson from Andrew Cuomo.”

From a farm in Rhinebeck, Molinaro officially announced his candidacy for the 19th Congressional District and his position as an opponent of outgoing Democrat Delgado.

In a speech provided to the Journal ahead of time, the Dutchess County Republican executive filed a series of complaints about the way the national government is run and accused Delgado of not being interested in helping residents of the 19th arrondissement. He referred to themes that have become popular among GOP candidates, alluding to fear of a socialist government and positioning himself as a stranger to Washington DC’s pessimism.

But he also said he plans to transfer fine-tuned programs and priorities to the Hudson Valley, such as programs for people with disabilities and protection of farmland and open spaces, to serve people through the country. And, he noted the need to heal divisions and end politicization.

“Years of service in local government leave me with a deep understanding of our community, our towns, villages, towns – hamlets and people,” Molinaro said.

The 45-year-old said his decision to run stems from what he sees as a lack of “common sense, competence and compassion” when it comes to decisions made at the national and state levels regarding the economy, small business, COVID response and public safety.

He accused Delgado, who is in his second term, of not doing enough to protect small businesses and farmers.

Delgado’s campaign believes differently, noting the work the Congressman has done since taking office, helping small businesses, protecting farms, and providing veterans and mental health assistance. In the past two months, Delgado announced two bills, which would encourage schools to buy food from small farms and create a website to help small business owners.

Representative Antonio Delgado

Delgado’s campaign said that Delgado “signed 12 bills under the Democratic and Republican administrations and garnered more than $ 400 million in direct support for our counties, towns and villages. He looks forward to continuing this work every year. day.”

Molinaro enters the race with the district’s borders, perhaps, in motion. The 19th is about to be reshaped by a statewide redistribution.

Molinaro led an unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign against former Cuomo in 2018. After his defeat, during his candidacy for another term as county manager in 2019, he said he would complete his term, which means that he would not seek another position while leading the county. .

But a lot has changed in the past year. The pandemic has further divided the population, and Democrats are in power in the White House and both houses of Congress.

The movement is not unexpected. Molinaro has previously said he had not ruled out a congressional candidacy, after ruling out firing another shot at the governor. And, clues were available on Molinaro’s social networks

On August 16, he tweeted about visiting farms in Columbia and Rennsselaer counties. Two weeks later, he showed photos of a visit to a Republican rally in Schoharie County. And, on September 4, he attended the Columbia County Fair.

Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro arrives at his press conference to announce his candidacy for the 19th Congressional District at Kesicke Farm in Rhinebeck, NY on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

Molinaro managed to stay in power in Dutchess despite the population going blue. And, when he came up against Cuomo, he won all but six counties north of Westchester, including Dutchess and much of the current 19th Congress card.

However, some messages from his speech on Thursday appeared to be a call for a dark red base. He said he believed New York and the country were less secure than they had ever been since 9/11 after what he called a “deadly retreat from Afghanistan”. the poor, the disabled, the homeless and the disenfranchised, ”alluding to growing crime in cities across the country and dirty streets.

“Here in the Hudson Valley,” he said, “we know something about the struggle for freedom and liberty.”

The ascent of Molinaro

Molinaro, who began his political career as a member of the Tivoli Village Board of Trustees in 1994 at the age of 18, again focused on Dutchess after losing to Cuomo.

During the pandemic, however, Molinaro made sure to challenge the governor at every turn, which some saw as an aspiration to run for a higher post again.

During his speech, Molinaro used Cuomo to say that leadership has failed to protect the elderly during the pandemic, keep schools closed, and let people with developmental disabilities “fend for themselves.”

De Delgado, Molinaro said: “I don’t think he sees the scale of this work, the task at hand, the ability not only to repair fences, but also to stand up for families, farmers and small businesses. overworked and overworked companies too often ignored. ”

The state is redesigning the neighborhoods. New York will lose one of its 27 congressional districts in 2022.

Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro arrives at his press conference to announce his candidacy for the 19th Congressional District at Kesicke Farm in Rhinebeck, NY on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

The 19th District has been one of the most difficult districts to manage as it stretches from Poughkeepsie to the Albany region and west to eastern Broome County. The area is a mix of farmland and struggling main streets.

“He grew up (in this neighborhood), he knows it intimately, he knows the people, he has known how things work here for decades,” said Michael McCormack, chairman of the Dutchess County Republican committee.

McCormack said the district posed a challenge in size and needed someone who could travel to all 11 districts to speak with voters.

“It’s a very difficult job, but he has a work ethic in his blood,” he said.

In the past, Delgado has won the district by touting issues like universal health coverage, opposing tax cuts that benefit the rich, and trade policies that impact farmers. He also expressed his commitment to criminal justice reform, such as the ban on private prisons and “institutionalized training on racial prejudice”.

Some of the bills he helped become laws include assistance for veterans, small businesses, and farms. Last year, Delgado introduced a bill regarding the payment of subsidies on small business loans, which was eventually absorbed and passed as part of broader legislation. He also introduced a bill that would give everyone the opportunity to opt for medicare.

Last year, Delgado retained his seat against Republican challenger Kyle Van De Water with a difference of more than 11 percentage points.

“As promised, Antonio Delgado fought for our region day after day and achieved significant results,” said a spokesperson for his campaign.

The next big escape nearby: Pawling

By Richard Lévy

As a travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for new places to get away from it all. Since the onset of COVID-19 last year and with my wings clipped, I have only had short stays. Montauk, Shelter Island and I just returned from an absolutely wonderful getaway to the lovely town of Pawling, just an hour’s drive away.

We rented an incredibly charming log cabin in a state forest for 10 days on a private lake. The cabin was nicely furnished and equipped with everything you could possibly need. There’s even a classic wood-burning stove for those chilly nights. There is a well-equipped kitchen that a gourmet chef would love and a super comfortable bed in the master bedroom, two bathrooms, a small second bedroom and a huge terrace facing the woods and the lake. By the lake there are two new kayaks and a flat bottom inflatable boat in the garage.

Pawling is charming in every way possible and totally off the vacation radar. An unlikely getaway for most people in Westchester for a weekend or even a week, but it’s so close and devoid of annoying tourists, crowds, and weekend traffic. The perfect place to turn off your engines.

This New England-like country town has an exceptional restaurant, McKinney & Doyle, with its inventive menu that offers incredibly delicious dishes. Start with the grilled Spanish octopus or New Zealand lamb chops, then try their huge honey crispy shrimp or fresh scuba scallops. Each mouth-watering appetizer artfully rests on a delicious bed of delicious mashed vegetables. There is an affordable wine list and a selection of decadent desserts from their bakery next door. Sunday brunch is the undisputed best in Dutchess County. Order their Maine lobster made with chilaquile corn tortillas, salsa verde lobster meat, avocado, poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise sauce. Their corned beef mince and eggs are the best you have ever had and served in an iron skillet. They unequivocally deserve a Michelin star.

Pawling has some lovely shops, including an old-fashioned bookstore you can get lost in. The Blue Olive offers a large selection of gourmet olive oils and specialty vinegars. You can do endless tasting until you find the ones you like.

There’s Vinny’s Deli with their outrageous homemade mozzarella and incredible selection of Italian meats and cheeses. Vinny magically transformed his delicious sandwiches into edible masterpieces. More delicious than in Naples, Florence or Rome. The Food Network featured Vinny’s margherita hero steak sandwich with mozzarella and finely grilled steak in its “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” program.

The Sunflour Bakery offers amazing sourdough bread and gluten-free cakes. Just outside of town there is Dykeman Farm for the freshest produce and eggs laid that morning.

Nearby, hike the Appalachian Trail to Canada. You’ve heard of the Hall & Oates musical duo. Well, Daryl Hall chose Pawling to open Daryl’s House Club restaurant with delicious food and free live music on weekends. Visit the nearby colorful towns of Rhinebeck or Millbrook and their vineyards.

If I’ve won you over with the off-the-radar town of Pawling, check out Airbnb or Home Away. Or better yet let me know if you are interested in renting the log cabin on a lake that I escaped from and I will put you in touch with Candace, she is a lovely and lively owner. She might consider letting you rent her precious log cabin that her father lovingly built 25 years ago.

After spending 10 absolutely lovely days at Pawling, I find it appalling that most people have never considered getting away from it all. (Sorry I had to use this row, my gf said my columns need to contain more fun.)
